How do different substances effect the outer shell of an egg?
Variables
Independent Variable:
The different heights are my independent variable.
Dependent Variable:
The eggs changes due to the liquids will act as my dependent variable.
Variables That Need To Be Controlled:
They will all be in the same area of the house so they will all be at the same temperature at the same time.The liquids will also cooled down to be at the same room temperature.
Hypothesis
In the vinegar I believe that the egg's shell will come off and will become bouncy. I also think it's height will decrease and it will be smelly. I believe the the water will do absolutely nothing to it.I think that the Pepsi will make the egg change color and the height will increase.I also think the green dye will cause to change color and the height will stay the same.

General Plan:
Experimental Design
I am going to see how different liquids affect the outer shell of an egg. Since I don’t want to stink up the classroom I will conduct this experiment at my house. (It is going to smell awful!) Nobody but me is involved in my experiment. My role is to conduct the experiment and to keep records of how it reacts to the different substantial environments. I am going to do two trials for each substance. I am going to keep all my data on the computer. Everyday when I come home from school I am going to write down on a sheet of paper record the size ,graph of progress, texture, and color. Then once I get to school I put it all on the computer.
Materials list
1. Notebook 2. Pencil 3. Carton of eggs 4. Clear cylinders 5. Vinegar 6. Water 7. Pepsi 8. Green dye 9. Rubber gloves 10. Lap top 11. Measuring tape
Detailed Procedure
Pour liquids in cylinders
Place eggs into the cylinders gently
Each day:
Put on Gloves
Grab notebook and pencil
Take egg out of the liquid
Measure the egg (short side)
Measure the egg (tall side)
Feel for texture
Judge color
Record data
Copy to a computer
Background Research
For some people the egg membrane is a representation of a cell. It is supposed to show how some things can pass threw the membrane without harm where as others cause change. It is the same way with an egg except it’s easier to show to others instead of messing with an actual cell.My project has to do with osmosis. It is when water molecules are crammed so they move around the membrane. Like hungry teenagers just before the bell rings for lunch. They are all crammed up at the door so they all move around to get out. The hungry teens are the molecules and the door is the membrane.Egg shells are made from calcium carbonate. It is the same stuff chalk and shells. Its calky white stuff. Since it is so powdery the egg shell is thin and hard like a shell.The egg membrane is a jello like substance that protects the baby chicken until it gets out the egg. This prevents it from any harm. When put in viniger the shell comes off and makes the membrane slightly more stable and bouncy. However it is still very fragile.

Conclusion
My hypothesis was that the water would do nothing, the Pepsi would turn it brown and make it smaller, the vinegar would make it smaller and see threw, and the green dye would turn it green. My results did and did not support my hypothesis.There is a relationship between my independent and dependent variable.Some pattern trends in my data were that the water stayed the height it started with. It was the same with the green dye and Pepsi. I think the tests i did went smoothly with minor problems because i dropped one of my eggs. If I could improve my experiment I would not drop the egg. An interesting future study would be mix Pepsi and vinegar to see what happens.
Discussion

Parts of my results did not support my hypothesis and some did. The water stayed the same, the Pepsi just turned it brown with white spot, the vinegar did make it see-threw but it expanded. The independent and dependant is strong in most of the results. Such as the vinegar, green dye, and Pepsi. I think my tests went smoothly because I recorded data every night. I was not expecting to drop my eggs though. If I could improve my experiment I would not drop the egg. An interesting futer study would be if I mixed vinegar with the Pepsi and see what happens.
